Radiocommunications device type approval regulation change in Tonga

Recently, Tonga Authority MEIDECC published and enforced “Communication Technical Rules 2018” to replace previous Type Approval Guidelines.


With effect of “Communication Technical Rules 2018”, all radio equipment must be type approved prior to being marketed for use in Tonga, or sold or otherwise supplied for use in Tonga.


Below products which were exempted from type approval based on previous Type Approval Guidelines are not exempted anymore now.


   a) Laptops or personal computers, tablets, and car radios with short range radio technology such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

   b) Digital displays or LCD screens for Digital cameras, Printers, car Audios.

   c) Receiver-only radio equipment intended to be used solely for the reception of sound (radio) and terrestrial TV broadcasting

       services, including satellite dishes and aerials.


For those previous exempted equipment which is in use or on the market already, there is no need to apply type approval.



There is no change with application requirements and lead time.











Tonga is enforcing type approval Rules on radio equipment

Tonga Authority Ministry of Information & Communications (MIC) recently started to enforce new type approval rules.

All radio equipment must be type approved by MIC prior to being imported and marketed for use in Tonga.


Either FCC or CE test reports and certificates can be accepted for submission.
