Home arrow-rootMexico - IFT responsibilities transferred to ATDT

In the end of year 2024, the Mexican Congress approved a constitutional reform to eliminate the Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT), the country’s telecommunications regulator. Its responsibilities will be transferred to a newly created body, the Agency for Telecommunications and Digital Transformation (ATDT).

Under the new decree, ATDT will take over the regulatory, supervisory, and operational duties previously managed by IFT, including spectrum management, licensing, and supervision of telecommunications and broadcasting services. Some staff and resources from IFT may be integrated into ATDT.

However, the new decree does not impose any deadline for Mexican Congress to pass the required secondary legislation to formally dissolve IFT and transfer its powers to ATDT. As a result, IFT continues to operate under the current Federal Antitrust Law and the Federal Telecommunications and Broadcasting Law without having a clear date for the end of its existence.
